MP3
MP3 is an acronym for MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, which is an audio coding method. It is one of the most popular audio compression methods and formats, because it is possible to store and distribute audio and music files in manageable size.
The MP3 format also has an important historical significance, as it drastically changed the way music is collected and consumed.
The mp3 compression is based on the reduction of audio content that is out of the hearing range of most people. The remaining audio information is also stored in a space-saving manner. This results in a 75 to 90 percent reduction in storage requirements compared to audio files stored in CD quality.
Advantages:
- very high distribution and compatibility
- ISO standard
Disadvantages:
- Poorer efficiency than modern codecs
- Limited bit rate
- Maximum of two sound channels
- Not recommended for high-quality audio files
