Like video formats, audio formats consist of a container and an embedded coded data stream (codec). The codec encodes and decodes the raw audio data, while the container stores the encoded audio data along with metadata.

In contrast to video containers, audio containers usually only support a single codec, this does not apply to general purpose multimedia containers such as MKV or AVI.
