Metadata – more than data about data

Metadata, often referred to as "data on data", have a number of tasks in the framework of repositories: they describe the objects.

The Department Repository Management PHAIDRA-Services supports you with questions about the input / automatic transfer of metadata in PHAIDRA and UNIDAM, mapping questions, filling out a data management plan and networking with experts.

 

 Provide additional information, for example, for further information
  • They support the accessibility of objects
  • They guarantee legal security
  • They facilitate the subsequent use of the objects, in which they describe the context in several languages
  • They are not considered to be their own work and are therefore freely usable
  • They enable optimal visualization of the objects and
  • Exchange with other systems

In some disciplines, metadata can also be the actual research data. In any case, metadata is more than just descriptions, so it is very important to us that metadata is prepared and maintained in an optimal way before uploading to the repository. Data management plans help to prepare for the handling of metadata.

 

In PHAIDRA the following five metadata fields are currently required:

  • Title of the object (dc:title)
  • Description (dc:description)
  • Language of object (dc:language)
  • Role / n: Here you can also enter Authority Files (dc:contributor)
  • License (dc:rights): When you choose a license, please note that this can not be undone

In addition, additional metadata fields are available that support the searchability and possibly the visualization of their objects.

In PHAIDRA, Dublin Core (dc) and an extended LOM scheme are used (Phaidra University of Vienna Metadata (PDF) by Lorisa Andreoli et al., University of Padua 2019).
