PNG

Portable Network Graphics is a raster graphics format that enables lossless data compression. PNG was developed as an improved and patent-free successor for the GIF format and is the most widely used lossless image format on the Internet today.

PNG supports grayscale, transparency and color images with up to 24bits per color channel. Since PNG was not developed for professional use in printing, CMYK colors are not supported.

Furthermore, PNG is not suitable for images, since the compression rate is much lower than JPG and therefore the storage space requirement would be much higher.

Advantages:

- Lossless

- supports transparency

- open standard

Disadvantages:

- Animations are not supported, unlike GIF
