HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language and is a description language which is mainly used in the rendering of websites.

HTML structures texts and information on how to render content that can be read and processed by a web browser. Since 2017 the current version is HTML 5.2, which no longer requires a document category definition.

An HTML document consists of a header that contains various metadata and a body with the contents of the page.

Webpage sourcecode can be saved as .html files. These are text files that can be viewed and edited with any plain text editor. To display a website a webbrowser is necessary.
